Hardwood Types
Hardwood is one of the most versatile of all floor coverings. Choose from either solid or engineered planks depending on the location of the room.
Solid Wood Floors
Solid wood floors use complete pieces of solid wood, generally 3/4" thick with board widths generally 2 1/4" and 3 1/4" wide. The length of the boards may vary from 9" to 72" long, with an average of 32".
Solid wood floors react to the environment in which they are placed. During the winter heating months, the amount of moisture in the wood decreases causing the floor to contract, with the possibility of gaps forming between boards. In the humid summer months, the wood may expand because of too much moisture, causing the floor to cup.
Engineered Wood Floors
Engineered wood floors have multiple layers of wood veneer glued and pressed together. These woods are available in 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" thick planks and 2 1/4", 3" and 5" wide planks. Lengths will vary from 12" upwards.
The layers of wood are cross-laminated for dimensional stability. Moisture will not affect these boards as much as solid wood floors. Engineered wood floors can be installed in virtually any room of the home.
